Sierra Leone (Bradt Travel Guide)

Sierra Leone (Bradt Travel

This new, thoroughly updated third edition of Bradt's Sierra Leone remains the only English-language guide dedicated to this unique West African destination, one of only three countries where the über-elusive pygmy hippo can be found and where coastal mountains and sheltered beaches are the stuff of daydreams and postcards. With Bradt's Sierra Leone you can explore the infamous diamond mines and rainforest-covered mountains; go in search of pygmy hippos or relax on the country's beaches and islands. Offering significantly more coverage than any other guide, it is an ideal companion for tourists, volunteers and international workers alike, and also covers newly declared eco-tourist sites as well as the trans-boundary ‘peace park' of Gola Forest National Park, shared with neighbouring Liberia. This new edition also covers Freetown's new beach music festival, as well as details of everything from where to visit rescued chimpanzees to touring the traditional wooden-board homes of the Krio people, descendants of repatriated slaves from the Americas and Europe.Sierra Leone continues to be one of the best beach destinations in West Africa, and also one of the region's best trekking destinations, given the varied topography and the presence of Mount Bintumani, West Africa's highest pea...

The Walk: Memoir of a Liberian Civil War Survivor

The Walk: Memoir of a Liberian Civil War

*INCLUDES BONUS DISCUSSION GUIDE! **PORTION OF PROCEEDS BENEFIT CHARITY. What is it like to be on the other side of the gun, running for your life and losing everything? What if you are only eleven years old? The Walk is a real life account of an adolescent boy, Brima Lamin, whose desperation for survival took him across several foreign countries ultimately seeking refuge in the United States. In this gripping memoir, the author tells how the entire course of his life was changed on one horrendous day, July 2, 1990 when rebel soldiers armed with AK-47s stormed his neighborhood. Over the course of four years to follow, he witnessed brutal atrocities barely escaping death during what many call one of the most horrific wars of all time, the Liberian Civil War. In the midst of losing it all, he came of age, found God and was able to come to a country that he had always dreamed about. The Walk challenges the reader to wonder how they will “walk” in the midst of the storm.

A school day for a village Krio (Creole) child of Freetown, Sierra Leone

A school day for a village Krio (Creole)

This book is a children’s color book based on a typical village school day in the 70s and 80s of the Krio (Creole) Children from the surrounding villages of Free Town, Sierra Leone. Overall, these typical school days are the building blocks for most creoles in the diaspora who grew up in one of the villages of Freetown, Sierra Leone. If you ask most of them, they will tell you that their primary and secondary school experiences contribute a lot to their innate resilience in pursuing their personal goals in a western society. For most, they wonder what it would have been like, had they not have their villages’ morals and values coupled with the education that their elementary and secondary schools gave them.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have occasionally been asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services in Sierra Leone. The purpose of this study is to understand the density of demand within Sierra Leone and the extent to which Freetown might be used as a point of distribution within Africa. From an economic perspective, however, Freetown does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries, rather, it represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for Freetown over the next five years for hundreds of industries, categories and products. The goal of this report is to report the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by Freetown when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. WATER AND SANITATION SYSTEMS IN PERI-URBAN COMMUNITIES IN FREETOWN: WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE SYSTEMS AT KROO BAY AND SUSAN'S BAY COMMUNITIES IN FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE

WATER AND SANITATION SYSTEMS IN PERI-URBAN COMMUNITIES IN

Water is a precious resource and vital for life, without it life could not be sustained. Access to safe and affordable supply of drinking water is universally recognized as a basic human need for the present generation and a pre-condition for the development and care of the next. Water is also a fundamental economic resource on which people's livelihood depends. Despite the importance of water and sanitation to mankind, it is but sad to note that about 2.4 billion people globally live under highly unsanitary condition with lack of adequate water supply.Even where available, it is unfit for domestic consumption thus running the risk of incidence and the spread of infectious diseases. Studies by the World Health Organization (WHO) have shown that 2.2 million people die of basic hygiene related diseases, like diarrhea every year. The greater majority are children in developing countries. It is very certain that the health of every community depends highly on clean and safe water supply, which is used for domestic purposes coupled with the general sanitary and hygienic conditions.

In the food industry, the brewery sector holds a strategic economic position with the annual world beer production exceeding 1.34 billion hectolitres in 2002. Beer is the fifth most consumed beverage in the world behind tea, carbonates, milk and coffee and it continues to be a popular drink with an average consumption of 23 liters/person per year. Assessment of Sanitation Facilities and Drainage Water Quality: Assessment of Sanitation Facilities and Drainage Water Quality, Kissy Low Cost Housing Estate, Freetown Sierra Leone

Assessment of Sanitation Facilities and Drainage Water Quality:

Majority of houses in Freetown/Sierra Leone are served by on-site sanitation systems. The faecal sludge from these systems are discharged untreated into the pre-urban environment, posing great risk to water resources and public health. The research investigated the sanitary system of the Kissy Low Cost Housing Estate, examining faecal waste management and it's effects on drainage water quality and human health. Water samples were collected from various points in the estate, which were analysed for physicochemical and microbiological quality. The sanitary condition of the estate was assessed through observation and discussion with major stakeholders. Two types of toilet systems were found common with one faecal waste official dumping site. Majority of the inhabitants use the bucket toilet system whose content is disposed in dug up holes, gutters, streams, etc contaminating the quality standard of the water. Analysis of the water samples collected showed that most of the parameters monitored fell out side safe limit of WHO guidelines. Findings from this research now revealed that water and sanitation management is crucial and need some external attention.

QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF GROUND WATER: ASSESSMENT OF WELL WATER QUALITY IN FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE

QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF GROUND WATER: ASSESSMENT OF WELL

Water wells are important sources of safe and clean drinking water in many settlements in Sierra Leone. The cost of construction is low and the fresh water it provides if adequately constructed, needs little or no chemical treatment. Calaba Town, the research area, lacks access to pipe borne water and wholly depends on wells for reliable source of water. The access to adequate safe and clean drinking water from these sources remains the prime factor affecting this community. This research therefore, geared towards assessing the physical, chemical and bacteriological status of samples from the sources monitored. A total of 67 wells were identified, majority being hand dug using bucket with rope to lift water from the wells. Some water wells were protected while others remained unprotected. The results indicated that all the wells monitored have lower pH values that fell outside WHO guidelines. Two wells showed significant values for Nitrate, Chloride, Conductivity and TDS. Iron, Phosphate, Sulphate and COD results showed satisfactory WHO guidelines. Moreover, the results showed high counts for Faecal and Non-Faecal Coliform with the exception of one well.

THE MANAGEMENT OF HIV/AIDS IN FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE: A STUDY OF HIV/AIDS IN SIERRA LEONE

THE MANAGEMENT OF HIV/AIDS IN FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE:

The problem of HIV/AIDS in Sierra Leone and other Sub-Saharan African countries is a popular topic among elites, and a common knowledge to many, but the gravity of its menace and the realization of its potency to cause both psychological and medical setbacks remains far-fetched. While the debate about the existence of the HIV carnage still lingers in the minds of many, including victims who don't know their HIV status, the virus continues to plunge nations into poverty, shattering families and making hundreds of orphans and many homeless. Further, in war devastated, resource-poor settings, many people contact sexually transmitted diseases either through rape, commercial sex or casual sex. And since HIV is also transmitted by blood transfusion and from mother to child, there were many possible ways of transmission of the disease in Sierra Leone, especially during the decade-long civil war, and the trend must have continued after the war. Out of 8,251 persons tested in Freetown for a period of seven months, 937 were positive with a percentage prevalence of 11.4%.

MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY AMONG CHILDREN UNDER FIVE YEARS IN FREETOWN: ASSESSMENT OF THE TRENDS IN MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY AMONG CHILDREN U5 YEARS OF ... HOSPITAL IN FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE

MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY AMONG CHILDREN UNDER FIVE YEARS

This research was designed to assess the trends in morbidity and mortality of U5 admitted at the PCMH in the East-end of Freetown, Sierra Leone, from 2004 to 2008. To achieve this, the data used were obtained from review of records in PCMH. Of the data collected cases that shows high prevalence morbidity and mortality include: Malaria, Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI), Anaemia, Diarrhoea, Convulsion and undiagnosed cases. Findings show that there is no significant improvement in the reduction of both U5 morbidity and mortality rate compared with previous study. The high prevalence of U5 morbidity in 2008 compared to the other years in review justified the trend in U5 morbidity and mortality. Malaria still poses a challenge as the leading cause of both morbidity and mortality among children U5 over the years; followed by ARI, Anaemia, Diarrhoea, Convulsion and Undiagnosed cases.

Empowering Freetown's Women Farmers: Exploring the experiences of

Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture (UPA) is becoming an increasingly important livelihood strategy for many individuals and families in Freetown, Sierra Leone. This is especially true for Freetown's women who make up 80% of Freetown's UPA community. Despite this, women farming in Freetown are under represented in literature, and the experiences of men and women farming have been assumed by policy makers to be uniform. This book explores the unique experiences of women engaged in UPA in Freetown. It investigates the relationships of women with each other, their communities, NGO's, Local and National Government, the Police, and banks. In doing so this book identifies distinct challenges faced by women farming, including land tenure issues and difficulties accessing clean water and capital for purchasing farming inputs and labour. After examining these challenges recommendations are made as to how they might be overcome by using and improving already existing relationships. This book will be especially useful to anyone working in areas related to development or urban food supply, particularly where gender is a focus.

CARE AND SUPPORT FOR PEOPLE WITH

HIV and AIDS remain a major problem to poor countries of the world. Moreover, an assessment of carers In Sierra Leone, showed that they were 55 percent efficient in providing much needed care for people living with HIV and AIDS, and much of the inefficiencies observed were logistics related.
