Beethoven: The 32 Piano Sonatas, Bagatelles
“Nobody plays this music more authoritatively and eloquently,” wrote London’s Sunday Times of Stephen Kovacevich in Beethoven. “He is in his element, responding wholeheartedly to the extreme physicality that Beethoven brought to music ... but the wit and delicacy of the playing are also remarkable.”Kovacevich himself has spoken of his love for the “fun and virtuosity” of the composer’s early sonatas, while in the often challenging later works he sees a “subtext of radiance and some sort of inherent faith in life.”

Schubert: The Late Piano Sonatas
Schubert: The Late Piano
British pianist Paul Lewis's auspicious 2001 harmonia mundi debut release marked the beginning of his fascination with the music of Franz Schubert. Thirteen years later, now hailed as ''the finest Schubert interpreter of his generation'' (Gramophone), Lewis offers this two-disc collection, the final installment of his three-part Schubert series, which presents newly recorded interpretations of sonatas D784 & 958 paired with his 2002 recording of Sonatas D959 and D960. The 'late' works of Schubert hold a special place in Lewis's heart. In a recent interview he said, ''There is no precedent in his music for what the language becomes - that sense of austerity, sparseness, hopelessness, terror even! I think he suddenly had an acute awareness of his own mortality.''

Beethoven: The Late Sonatas
Beethoven: Late Sonatas
Pianist Wilhelm Kempff enjoyed a long career, and boasted an impressive catalog of LP recordings. Oftentimes, it is forgotten that he actually began his recording career during the 1920s in the acoustic period. During the pre-war period, Kempff recorded 24 of Beethovens 32 sonatas on 78s, and he was one of the most recorded Beethoven pianists during that time. He made the first recordings of the Beethoven sonatas Op81a, Op90, and Op101, which are included in this set. Kempff is known for his poetic and lyrical playing, which is brilliantly captured in these recordings, largely due to the fact that editing was not available during this period. None of the recordings featured in this set are available elsewhere, and the Op90 and Op101 have never been reissued since their original release.

Haydn: 6 Late Piano Sonatas
Elements of Sonata Theory: Norms, Types, and Deformations in the Late-Eighteenth-Century Sonata
Elements of Sonata Theory: Norms, Types, and Deformations
Elements of Sonata Theory is a comprehensive, richly detailed rethinking of the basic principles of sonata form in the decades around 1800. This foundational study draws upon the joint strengths of current music history and music theory to outline a new, up-to-date paradigm for understanding the compositional choices found in the instrumental works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and their contemporaries: sonatas, chamber music, symphonies, overtures, and concertos. In so doing, it also lays out the indispensable groundwork for anyone wishing to confront the later adaptations and deformations of these basic structures in the nineteenth and earlier twentieth centuries. Combining insightful music analysis, contemporary genre theory, and provocative hermeneutic turns, the book brims over with original ideas, bold and fresh ways of awakening the potential meanings within a familiar musical repertory. Sonata Theory grasps individual compositions-and each of the individual moments within them-as creative dialogues with an implicit conceptual background of flexible, ever-changing historical norms and patterns. These norms may be recreated as constellations "compositional defaults," any of which, however, may be stretched, strained, or overridden altogether for individualized structural or ...

Paul Badura-Skoda plays Schubert - The Complete Piano Sonatas
Paul Badura-Skoda plays Schubert - The Complete Piano
The first CD release of a landmark editionPaul Badura-Skoda is unquestionably the outstanding Schubert pianist of the 20th century, declared the Leipzig Volkszeitung in 2012. An astute interpreter, a sensuous singer on the keyboard, one who plumbs the notes fully yet treats each one with love and intelligent solicitude. Coinciding with the pianist's 90th birthday later this year, Sony Classical is pleased to announce the first CD release of Badura-Skoda's complete recording of the Schubert sonatas, an LP collector's item ever since its original publication in 1971.Encouraged by the Vienna-born RCA Victor executive George Marek, Badura-Skoda recorded all of Franz Schubert's sonatas including his own completions of several works left unfinished by the composer between May 1967 and May 1971. When RCA released the complete set of sonatas on 13 LPs at the end of 1971, the Gramophone reviewer showered Badura-Skoda's interpretations with praise: As a fellow Viennese he has the style in his blood and loves the music. Nothing is over-driven or inflated. Schubert for him is no would-be Beethoven: he conveys the music's relaxed lyricism, its basic simplicity, emphasizing romantic dreams more than the stern, classical sonata heritage. Now this very special set is available again, newly remast...

Late Dates with Mozart: Three Late Sonatas for Piano and Violin - Sonata in B-flat, K.454; Sonata in E-flat, K.481; Sonata in A major, K.526
Late Dates with Mozart: Three Late Sonatas for
Mozart s relationship to the violin sonata can be traced to the first years of his career as a child prodigy; his first four opuses were collections of violin sonatas in the Italian style, published in Paris starting in 1764 when the composer was just eight years old. Of course, by this time Mozart was already an experienced touring violinist and these early works were probably intended for his own performances. The sonatas represented on this disc are from much later in the composer s career, long after his child celebrity days had ended, beginning when the composer as a not yet 30-year-old man was just another struggling musician competing for the limited opportunities available in Europe. Mozart had spent much of the 1770s searching for better employment than he had at the provincial court of Salzburg, where he found it difficult fulfilling his duties for church and court. His continual begging for dismissal from his employer there, the Archbishop Colloredo, ultimately paid off and he finally settled in Vienna as an independent musician in 1781. One of the first things he did after establishing himself in Vienna was to publish a set of violin sonatas. His profile was rising as a composer, but he was primarily known during these years as a virtuoso keyboard player, competing in...
