13 Life Lessons from Philmont: Not what to
The people returning to Base Camp after 12 days in the Philmont Scout Ranch back-country are different from the people heading out. Most will treasure the experience for the rest of their lives and encourage Scouters all over the world to sign up for a Philmont trek. What is so powerful about the experience? Why do people sign up for a second or third trip? In a world full of comforts and distractions, Philmont has neither. Yet because of that, it is one of the most powerful learning environments most of us will ever encounter. Here are the lessons I learned.

Philmont: A History of New Mexico's Cimarron Country
Philmont: A History of New Mexico's Cimarron
Here is the first comprehensive history of the Colfax County area of northeastern New Mexico. Best known today as the home of the Philmont Scout Ranch, where thousands of Boy Scouts from around the world gather every year, this beautiful country has a violent and varied past. Centering around the town of Cimarron, the region includes much of the vast Maxwell Land Grant, one of the largest pieces of land to be owned by one man in the history of the United States. Controversy over control of the land began in the sixteenth century with quarrels among rival American Indian tribes. Spanish and later American troops continued the bloodshed for centuries more. The culmination of the area's history of violence was the notorious Colfax County War between homesteaders and landowners that began in 1875 and continued until the Supreme Court acted fifteen years later. A gold and silver rush lured prospectors to the Maxwell ranch and booming Elizabethtown in the 1860s. But by 1870 the supply of precious metals was almost exhausted, and today Elizabethtown is a ghost town."An interesting and welltold account of an important area, Philmont deserves a place on the Western book shelf."--Denver Post

Situated where the High Plains meet the Rocky Mountains and where the Santa Fe Trail crosses the Cimarron River, the village of Cimarrón has a richly varied history. Spectacular rock columns, thick seams of coal, dinosaur footprints, pit houses, and petroglyphs echo an early geologic and human presence. Spanish explorers encountered area Native American settlements in the 1700s, and by the 1820s, mountain men roamed these Rockies while eastern merchants followed Indian trails to Santa Fe. By the 1860s, Cimarrón was the headquarters of a vast Mexican land grant managed by Lucien Maxwell and Kit Carson. A gristmill supplied local soldiers and Indians, and the discovery of gold attracted thousands. The Colfax County War erupted after speculators purchased the grant in 1870. When the railroad arrived in 1906, a “New Town” was built on the north side of the river. Today, through tourism and the Philmont Scout Ranch, the Cimarrón area offers a unique window into the history and growth of the West.

On the reverse is a color assignment sheet for the training outfits. ----- Date of publication estimated, somewhere between 1941 and 1957 because the Ranger program is not mentioned. In these days Philmont was run utilizing a half dozen "base camps" constructed at strategic locations. Visiting Scouts lived at one of these camps and did day hikes to surrounding locations. For expeditions to a different area, the Scouts packed their gear onto burros and hiked to another base camp. ------- Wealthy oil magnate and wilderness enthusiast Waite Phillips sometimes allowed others including a few Boy Scout troops to visit his ranch. He was so impressed with the Scouts that in the late 1930's he donated two sections of his land to the Boy Scouts of America. The only condition was that it be used "for the benefit of the members of the Boy Scout organization". In 1941, Phillips added more Philmont property, including the Villa Philmonte, bringing the total to 127,395 acres.

The Life and Times of Jack L. Rhea, Former Director of Camping Philmont Scout Ranch
The Life and Times of Jack L. Rhea,
And what times they were! With over 100 photographs and illustrations, this exhaustively researched book brings back those formative days of yesteryear when Philmont emerged from a strongly southwestern bias into what was realized as a national treasure. While the Philmont community now takes many of Jack Rhea's introduction for granted, they were tremendous innovations in their day. Follow along as this book thoroughly examines the launch of the Philmont Rangers and the reason for their creation: another Jack Rhea development, the twelve-day expedition. This book explores the back story behind the Rhea era (1954-1962) when much of what comprises the modern Philmont came to be. Tent City. Ranger City. Explosive growth at the Philmont Training Center. The first comprehensive topographic map. The first radio system. The iconic Philmont arrowhead patch. And new camps including Miners Park, Clarks Fork, and Indian Writings. The story of Jack Rhea the man emergers in this book. He was a great deppression-era youngster, star basketball playe, Eagles Scout, cowboy, and teacher before becoming a professional scouter. During World War 2, he was a decorated leader of young men in battle. Many years after retiring from the top levels of the BSA National Office. Jack Rhea was asked what the ...
