Piñon Pine | Tree Seed Grow Kit | The Jonsteen Company

Piñon Pine | Tree Seed Grow Kit |

A beautiful, small pine well-suited for container-growing, rock gardens, and small yards, Piñon Pine comes from the desert mountains of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Wyoming. Also known as Nut Pine, this lovely tree is characterized by slow, bushy growth and small, roundish, light-brown cones containing large, delicious seeds valued for food. Despite its hardiness and drought resistance, Piñon Pine is surprisingly uncommon in cultivation. The tallest Pinon Piñe is over 70 feet, but this species usually stays much more compact, growing to typical heights of 10 to 20 feet over the course of decades. For pine nut production, plant several specimens to cross pollinate. About Jonsteen's Grow Kits: Growing a tree from seed is a magical and fascinating experience for people of all ages. Our 100% guaranteed Grow Kits provide everything you need to germinate some of the world's largest and most interesting tree species from seed - seeds, growing medium, a mini-greenhouse, and detailed instructions, which lead you through the whole process, from cold-stratifying your seeds to germination and transplanting.

10 Pinyon Pine Nut Seeds ~ Sustainably Raised Hard Shell Pinus Edulis Bonsai USA

10 Pinyon Pine Nut Seeds ~ Sustainably Raised

As an arid climate tree, the Pinyon Pine is extremely drought tolerant, even more so than the taller growing pine varieties of this region. Additionally, this tree, when mature will provide a copious amount of Pine Nuts, edible seeds which are a delicious super food packed with protein and all of the essential amino acids! To the indigenous tribes of this area, the food from these trees were the cornerstone of their diet. Growing Instructions: This is an arid climate plant that grows natively in the desert, so you'll want to respect those conditions. Use a sandy, well draining soil and plenty of warmth when germinating these seeds. The temperature for seed germination is about 17-19C. If temperatures are above 25C seedling establishment will be inhibited. Temperatures below about 10C create seed dormancy. The best germination is obtained following planting in coarse river sand or pumice with about 25% moisture. As with most seeds, they will rot if the soil is too wet. It is important to add mycorrhizal fungus gathered from under a stand of other pine trees, because in the absence of the fungi the trees are likely to suffer phosphorous deficiency and make poor growth. Once established, the young pine nut trees should not be over-watered. Once the nut shell has fallen, you may repl...

The Sound of Light in Trees: Bark Beetles and the Acoustic Ecology of Pinyon Pines

The Sound of Light in Trees: Bark Beetles

Using innovative microphones of his own design, David Dunn takes us into the almost unknown acoustical world inside pine trees, home to an extraordinary array of living sound makers. This intimate sonic environment includes the sounds of the trees' circulatory system, branches moving in the wind, and the communication of insects, most strikingly a concentration of bark beetles (Ips confuses) taking advantage of dry tree tissues in the midst of a prolonged drought. This soundscape composition presents a composite audio portrait of what we might hear in the myriad branches of a single pinyon pine in the foothills of the southern Rockies. In addition to being a compelling listening experience, the recordings presented here suggest that the acoustic behaviors of bark beetles are far more varied than previously realized. Dunn's extensive liner notes include descriptions of the physiology of beetle sound production and make the case for a breaking the mutually self-imposed barriers between science and the arts. 100% of the revenues from sales of this CD will support the work of the Acoustic Ecology Institute.
